You get this high strung vibe as soon as you step in. These days, while it's standard procedure to scan LeaveHomeSafe wherever you go, you can always sense when a particular store or restaurant is particularly stringent about it. A mostly welcoming but hawk-eyed staff member sitting by the door stares at me cautiously as I enter.  He wants to see my LeaveHomeSafe. Ok no problemo.

I step towards the counter to order, and as I look at the boards and menu on display, I see this:

I thought to myself- oh, it's THAT kind of place. 'We're so particular about our coffee, we believe in milk only, no alternative milk. Oh, and we want people to remember life before the internet and actually talk to other people. No WiFi for you!' (yet, I saw plenty of power plugs and sockets - mixed signals much?)

Then, I finally get a closer look at the menu and- wow, coffees here are expensive. $46 for a hot Americano? On average their coffees cost $40-50, with some even being as expensive at $50-70. Holy crap, am I tripping? Am I really at the Peninsula?

I order my usual - an Americano - and find a seat. I glance at my receipt and - geez that's a lotta words basically telling me I can't cheap out and think I can get away with ordering 1 drink and sit here for hours. I understand that it's the unspoken rule in most coffee shops, but here they make it painstakingly clear in black and white on your receipt. To be honest, it made me a little nervous, like I did something wrong even when I didn't. Kind of like the feeling you get when you pass by a police officer.

To top it all off, my coffee took ages to come. Why did it take 15 minutes to make an Americano? It wasn't even that busy when I was there.

Just as I was ready to hate this place, my coffee finally came and I took my first sip. Ok, I have to admit it was pretty good. Could I get the same quality for cheaper at other places? Probably. But then, as I took another sip and marvel at my surroundings, enjoying the sight of shelves and shelves of books, the natural sunlight pouring in, and the high ceilings, I couldn't get too mad.
