I had the pleasure of dining at this exquisite Shanghai restaurant recently, and I couldn't wait to share my experience.From the moment I stepped in, the ambiance struck me—a perfect blend of elegance and comfort, with a view that adds a magical touch to the dining experience. The staff greeted us warmly, and their attention to detail was impeccable throughout the evening.Now, let's talk about the food, which was nothing short of spectacular:- Shanghai Smoked Fish (上海燻魚): The fish was smoked to perfection, with flavors that danced on the palate.- Explosive Oil River Shrimp (油爆河蝦): These shrimps were succulent and bursting with a spicy kick that left us craving for more.- Drunken Crab in Shaoxing Wine (花雕醉蟹): This delicacy was a highlight. The crab, marinated in fine Shaoxing wine, had absorbed all the aromatic goodness.- Eel Paste with Shiang Oil (響油鱔糊): We opted for a medium serving. The eel was tender, and the Shiang oil brought a unique depth to the dish.- Steamed Tiger Grouper with Pickled Vegetables and Chili in the Snow (雪裏紅蒸黃皮老虎斑):It was a showstopper. The fish was steamed to perfection, and the pickled vegetables provided a tangy counterbalance to the sweetness of the fish.- Camphor Tea Smoked Duck (樟茶鴨): A whole duck that was a true testament to the chef's skill—smoky, flavorful, and utterly delicious.- Rice Pot with Crab Meat and Fish Maw (蟹粉花膠煲飯): A large pot that was the perfect finale to our meal. The combination of crab meat and fish maw with the rice was divine.Each dish was a testament to the chefs' mastery over traditional Shanghai cuisine, with a flair that made each bite memorable.I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Seldom write a comment but would like to share this sweet and memorable experience. It was our 13 years anniversary and my husband knows that I love Chinese food, he chose the Merchant to celebrate our day. From the entrance at 43/f to the whole dining service, all the staff with smiling face and politeness giving us feel of privilege.🩷Food was delicious, as I love seafood, and the sauce made me curious how to make this perfect match!Wine is lovely, some sparkling and my favourite Pinot Noir, adding more romance to the meal. Here at The Merchants, a modern, upscale Shanghainese restaurant located at Forty Five which sits atop of Gloucester Tower at the Landmark. Pic 1️⃣: 松鼠桂魚 / 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭 & 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐞 - $728 hkd 🐠 — A well-known classic in Jiangsu cuisine. Super tender on the inside, fish was well deep fried but could’ve been even more crispy on the outside. It’s smothered in their delicious tangy sweet and sour sauce which really opened up your appetite.Pic 2️⃣: 魚子醬茶燻蛋 / 𝐓𝐞𝐚 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐄𝐠𝐠 𝐓𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐫 - $116 hkd 🍳 — Hard to go wrong with. The tea aroma was perfectly balanced and the eggs were well cooked. They’re finished with a generous amount of caviar to give them that luxurious touch and umami boost.Pic 3️⃣: 金衣大蝦球 / 𝐖𝐨𝐤-𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐠𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 - $318 hkd 🦐 — Prawns were fresh with a springy texture. The salted egg yolk paste was so decadent and flavourful and coated the prawns evenly.Pic 4️⃣: 樟茶鴨 / 𝐉𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐮𝐜𝐤 - $328 hkd 🦆 — A signature dish and a must-try when coming here! The duck was super flavourful after having been marinated in green onions and salted overnight. The meat was also incredibly tender and juicy too. It’s smoked with Jasmine tea leave to give it that lovely aroma that lingers on your palate. This comes with a piping hot serving of buns which went perfectly with the duck!Pic 5️⃣: 紅油抄手 / 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢 𝐎𝐢𝐥 - $128 hkd 🌶️ — Pretty good! The wontons were well stuffed and the meat to veggie ratio was perfect too. The sauce is more on the sweeter side, and I tend to prefer more savoury flavours when it comes to dumplings. The chili oil used was aromatic and definitely had a kick to it!Pic 6️⃣: 揚州大煮乾絲 / 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐟𝐮 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞 - $188 hkd 🥬 — This was a huge disappointment as it tasted like nothing 😂 I thought the chicken consommé would be rich and flavourful, but it honestly just tasted like water. As a result, the dried tofu shreds and vegetables weren’t able to absorb any flavour. Pic 7️⃣: 佛門素鵝 / 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬 - $128 hkd— Super crispy on the outside, and had a great crunch.
