I went to Wakas Mess on the strength of their Open Rice reviews. I was a little hesitant-- of the 14 English reviews, 6 are by non-members and 5 are by accounts with only 1-review. But I'm happy to say that the food is great.I showed up a little after 2:00pm on a Tuesday, and the restaurant was completely empty. Some other reviewers mentioned pappadums-- I didn't get any, but I suppose that had to do with my odd lunching hour.
I'm a huge spicy-food fan, so I pretty much always order the vindaloo-- chicken vindaloo this time-- and I asked them to make it very spicy. Well, I had no complaints. The curry had 5 or 6 large chunks of tender, boneless chicken, and 2 large chunks of potato. The sauce was a fiery deep-red, almost maroon, and was chunky, which is how I like it. It was truly spicy too-- I'd recommend it only for the serious spice fanatics. Exactly what I wanted: A
I also ordered some samosas. They didn't look like much and their flaky shells were a little bit thin, but the filling was exceptionally good. Maybe a little salty, but tasty all the same. They came with a creamy mint chutney that was also quite good. They also had a little bit of spice to them, which is nice! A
I only had a little bit of the food, but what I had was great. A
